Saligao Church
Saligao,
which is just outside the North Goa beach-belt, has seen significant concerns
over the large-scale sale of ground-water from a number of wells in the
village, particularly at Donvaddo. There has also been concern raised by
villagers over the dumping of garbage from the coastal belt on the hillock atop
the village, partly on village lands and partly on land belonging to the
Calangute comunidade but very close (and overlooking) the village
Bom Jesus of
Basilica
The Basilica of Bom Jesus,
"Good" or "Infant" Jesus, is a Catholic basilica in Goa,
India. It is best known for housing the tomb of St. Francis Xavier, the Jesuit
missionary to India and Japan. One of the richest churches in Goa, the Basilica
of Bom Jesus is covered with marble and inlaid with precious stones and
paintings depicting the life of St. Francis Xavier. The basilica is considered
the finest example of baroque architecture in India.
St Cathedral
The St.
Cajetan church is located in Old Goa near the Se cathedral church. The church
is visited by numerous tourists because of exquisite architecture. This vast
and strikingly beautiful church has been constructed on the primary design of
the Basilica of St. Peter located in Rome. The architectural style is basically
Corinthian in nature and is used generously inside as well outside the church.
The Saint Cajetan church of India was originally named as Church of Our Lady of
Divine Providence.
Manguesi Temple
The
Mangesh Linga is said to have been consecrated on the mountain of Mangireesh (Mongir)
on the banks of river Bhagirathi by Lord Brahma, from where the Saraswat
Brahmins brought it to Trihotrapuri in Bihar. They carried the linga to
Gomantaka and settled at Kushasthali, the present-day Cortalim,
establishing their most sacred and ancient temple of Mangesh on the banks of
the river Gomati or Zuari as it is called today. Lord Mangesh is worshipped
here in the shape of a Shiva linga. According to the legends
Lord Shiva had manifested in to a tiger to scare Parvati.
Paravati who was paranoid at the sight of the tiger went in search of Lord
Shiva. Parvati was supposed to say "Trahi maam Gireesh" but instead
out of nervousness she said: "Trahimangeesh".
Fort Aguada
Fort
Aguada was the most prized and crucial fort of Portuguese. The fort is so large
that it envelops the entire peninsula at the south western tip of Bardez. Built
on the mouth of river Mandovi, it was strategically located and was the chief
defence of Portuguese against the Dutch and Marathas.
Vagator Beach
Barely a couple of kilometers
of cliff tops and parched grassland separate Anjuna from the southern fringes
of its nearest neighbor, Vagator. A desultory collection of ramshackle
farmhouses and picturesque old Portuguese bungalows scattered around a network
of leafy lanes, the village is entered at the east via a branch off the Mapusa
Road, which passes a few small guesthouses and restaurants before running down
to the sea.
Calangute Beach
Famous in
the region as “Queen of the Beaches,†calangute beach boasts through its presence
in north-east from state capital Panaji at mere 15 kilometers. It is said that
calangute beach Goa remains largest one in the northern region. As stories go
on, hippies had discovered this beach during the 60’s so is it famous since
then. Locals and tourists find here a true replica of Goa beach culture so its
popularity is unbound indeed.
